Classify the operation

List the integration’s operations before writing a retry loop. Identify which only read data and which create an order, change state, or use balance. A repeated read may be acceptable within API limits; a repeated purchase may create another order. Review the actual API contract for supported duplicate-prevention features. Do not assume that an idempotency header from another service works here unless it is documented.

Handle uncertain purchase results

If the connection drops after you submit an order, the server may already have processed it. Preserve the request context and inspect the account’s current orders before making another purchase. If an order identifier was returned, reconcile that specific record. When the result cannot be established automatically, surface a clear pending-review state instead of treating uncertainty as a failure and charging again.

Separate response and parsing problems

An authentication error, insufficient-balance response, rate limit, malformed response, and network timeout each need different handling. Read documented status codes and response fields. Do not convert every non-success response into the same retry instruction. A parser failure should preserve safe diagnostic context, including the endpoint and time, while excluding the API key and received message secrets. Avoid displaying raw server errors to end users.

Test the failure paths

Use controlled mocks for timeouts, delayed responses, invalid JSON, and duplicate callbacks. Confirm that one logical purchase does not create repeated buying actions. Make logs useful through correlation identifiers and timestamps rather than full credentials. For a real unresolved order, use the dashboard record to reconcile what happened. Clear retry rules reduce unnecessary purchases and make support reports easier to investigate.

Questions and answers

Is a failed HTTP connection proof that no order exists?

No. The server may have processed the request before the connection failed.

Should every API error be retried?

No. Authentication, balance, request validation, rate limits, and network failures require different handling.
